2012 Caucus Information

When is Caucus?

Caucus is March 6th, 2012.  Registration starts at 6:15PM and the meeting goes until 9pm.

What is Caucus?

Caucus is the first step in our Party's nomination process.  It is how we nominate Democratic candidates for elected office.  Registered voters in each political party attend separate, small meetings, or caucuses, in towns and neighborhoods across the state. The Boulder County Democratic Party will organize evening Democratic caucus meetings on March 6, 2012 for all precincts in Boulder County (Republican caucus meetings will be held on Feb 7, 2012).  Our caucus meetings are held in schools, community buildings, libraries, fire stations, and coffee shops.  At the caucuses, those in attendance indicate their support for candidates competing for their party's nomination by raising hands, or by splitting into groups supporting each candidate.  The results of the caucus voting, however, do not directly determine which candidate will win the support of Boulder County's voters.  In fact, the caucuses are just first step in the process.  Each caucus meeting selects delegates to send to the county assembly (for local races) and the county convention (for the Presidential race).  Click here to see the number of delegates and alternates each precinct will send (Excel or PDF version).  The Boulder County Assembly and Convention will be held March 24, 2012 at Skyline High School, Longmont (map).  At county assemblies and conventions across the state, Democrats select delegates to district assemblies and conventions where delegates to the state assembly and convention are chosen.  The Colorado State Democratic Assembly and Convention will be held April 14, 2012 in Pueblo, CO.

At the State Assembly, candidates for contested state level races are nominated to compete in the Primary Election (June 26, 2012).  The democratic winner of the June primary will stand for election against the Republican nominee in the General Election on November 6, 2012.

At the State Convention, state delegates cast their votes to send delegates to the Democratic National Convention which will be held September 3-7, 2012 in Charlotte, NC.  Delegates at the National Convention then officially nominate the Democratic presidential candidate.  This candidate is then the Democratic Presidential nominee for the General Election November 6, 2012.  If you would like more information about how to become a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, click here.

Why Do We Use the Caucus Process?

The Democratic Party needs some way to nominate candidates especially in races where more than one Democrat is running for the same elected position.  Some advantages of the caucus system over the primary system:   more representative, allows an opportunity for neighbors to get together in person and discuss their nominees, increases party organization by allowing for the direct election of Precinct leaders, makes the election of precinct leaders transparent and available to more people, allows for direct input into the party's platform.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Where is my caucus meeting? Use the look up tool on this page to find your precinct number and caucus meeting location.  Or find your precinct's assigned caucus location on this list.  Find your precinct number here
  • I want to be a delegate, but I can't attend caucus.  What do I do?  You do not need to be physically present at caucus to be elected a delegate.  Get someone from your precinct to attend caucus and nominate you to be a delegate.  If you are chosen, you can attend higher assemblies/conventions.  However, delegates are committed to showing up at future meetings, so don't waste your precinct vote by not representing them!
