The County Assembly and County Convention are the second step in our Party's candidate nomination process. Caucus is the first step in our Party's nomination process. Registered voters in each political party attend separate, small meetings, or caucuses, in towns and neighborhoods across the state. The Boulder County Democratic Party will organize evening Democratic caucus meetings on March 6, 2012 for all precincts in Boulder County (Republican caucus meetings will be held on Feb 7, 2012). At the caucuses, those in attendance indicate their support for candidates competing for their party's nomination by raising hands, or by splitting into groups supporting each candidate. The results of the caucus voting, however, do not directly determine which candidate will win the support of Boulder County's voters. Each caucus meeting selects delegates to send to the county assembly (for local races) and the county convention (for the Presidential race). Click here to see how many delegates and alternates each precinct will send to the County Assembly and Convention (Excel or PDF version.) The Boulder County Assembly and Convention will be held March 24, 2012 at Skyline High School, Longmont (map). At county assemblies and conventions across the state, Democrats select delegates to district assemblies and conventions where delegates to the state assembly and convention are chosen. The Colorado State Democratic Assembly and Convention will be held April 14, 2012 in Pueblo, CO.
At the State Assembly, candidates for contested state level races are nominated to compete in the Primary Election (June 26, 2012). The democratic winner of the June primary will stand for election against the Republican nominee in the General Election on November 6, 2012.
At the State Convention, state delegates cast their votes to send delegates to the Democratic National Convention which will be held September 3-7, 2012 in Charlotte, NC. Delegates at the National Convention then officially nominate the Democratic presidential candidate. This candidate is then the Democratic Presidential nominee for the General Election November 6, 2012. LIST OF PUEBLO HOTELS: here
- I attended caucus but I can't remember if I was elected to be a delegate. How do I find out? Please call BCDP HQ 303-442-3423 and we will help you.
- I want to be a delegate, but I can't attend caucus. What do I do? You do not need to be physically present at caucus to be elected a delegate. Get someone from your precinct to attend caucus and nominate you to be a delegate. If you are chosen, you can attend higher assemblies/conventions. However, delegates should commit to showing up at future meetings, don't waste your precinct's vote by not representing them!
- I am a delegate to the County Assembly or Convention but I can't attend. What do I do? At caucus, people were elected to be alternates to the County Assembly and Convention. One of these people who most closely match your candidate preference etc. will automatically take your place. You do not need to contact BCDP HQ to let us know you will be absent, nor do you need to try to find a replacement. Once you have missed a convention/assembly, you have forfeited your chance to be a delegate to a higher assembly or convention.
- I am an alternate to the County Assembly or Convention. How do I know if I will be needed? There is no way for us to know beforehand how many alternates will be needed. As an alternate, you should attend if at all possible to ensure that Boulder County is fully represented at higher assemblies and conventions. BCDP will make every effort to quickly seat alternates at the County assembly and convention and tell any extra alternates when they can go home.
- I am an alternate to the County Assembly or Convention. How can I increase my chances that I will be seated for an absent delegate? Alternates will be seated in a designated order which takes into account their candidate preference, what district they live in and what time they arrived at the assembly/convention registration table etc. Showing up early can help you get an early "time stamp" which is one part of the formula used to determine what order the alternates will be seated. Alternates: please be patient, it is a complicated process and we must make it fair for everyone.
- I'd like to attend the National Convention September 3-7, 2012 in Charlotte, NC. What do I do? The Colorado State Democratic Party has put together an Info Packet About How to Become A National Convention Delegate.
- I know that the County Assembly and Convention cost the Boulder County Dems a lot to run, how do I donate? Thanks for asking! We will accept donations at these meetings, but if you prefer, you can visit our contribution page and donate that way instead. Thanks!
