2012 ELECTION TIMELINE
JANUARY, 2012
6-January Last day to affiliate with a political party in order to vote in the March 6th precinct caucus.
11-January General Assembly to convene 2012 regular session.
FEBRUARY, 2012
6-February Last day to register to vote for the March 6th precinct caucus. (Must be a resident of the precinct for 30days and registered no later than 29 days before the precinct caucus)
6-February Last day to change precinct boundaries before the March 6th precinct caucus.
6-February First day to circulate major/minor party candidate petitions.
7-February Last day for county clerk to furnish each major political party with a list of registered electors in the county who are affiliated with that political party.
23-February Last day to post signs for the March 6th precinct caucus.
MARCH, 2012
6-March Precinct Caucus Day (Held the 1st Tuesday in March. However, in a presidential election year, political parties may choose to hold their precinct caucus on the 1st Tuesday in February.)
28-March Last day for the county clerk and recorder to mail a voter information card to any registered elector whose registration record has been marked "inactive - failed to vote" if the Primary Election is to be conducted by mail ballot.
31-March Deadline to hold county assemblies if the precinct caucuses were held on March 6th. (No later than 25 days after precinct caucuses)

County candidates' designations and acceptances must be filed no later than 4 days after the adjournment of the assembly. If faxed, the original must also be filed and postmarked no later than 10 days after the adjournment of the assembly.
APRIL, 2012
2-April Last day to file major/minor party candidate petitions.
6-April Deadline for submitting draft to title board for initiatives to be voted on in 2012.
14-April Last day to hold major/minor party (state) assemblies.

Designations and acceptance forms must be filed no later than 4 days after adjournment of the assembly.If faxed, the original must also be filed and postmarked no later than 10 days after the adjournment of the assembly.  Objections to nominations, designations, or petitions shall be filed with the district court within 5 days after the election official's sufficiency statement was issued or after the certificate of designation was filed with the designated election official.
18-April Last Title Board Hearing for measures that will appear on the 2012 General Election ballot.
20-April Last day a write-in candidate may file an Affidavit of Intent for the Primary Election.
24-April Last day for the county chairperson to certify lists of election judges to the county clerk.
MAY, 2012
7-May Earliest day for judicial candidates to file declaration of intent.
12-May First day that a county clerk and recorder conducting the Primary Election by mail ballot may mail a notice to all unaffiliated active registered electors and all unaffiliated electors marked "inactive - failed to vote."
12-May Deadline to send mail/mail-in ballots to overseas military voters.
25-May Last day to change or withdraw from major political party affiliation.
29-May  Last day to register to vote for the Primary Election.
JUNE, 2012
4-June First day mail & mail-in ballots may be sent to voters, except for UOCAVA voters.First day mail & mail-in ballots may be made available at the county clerk's office.
8-June
Deadline for the county clerk to send mail ballots for a Primary Election conducted by mail ballot.
11-June
Last day to appoint the Board of Canvassers for the Primary Election.
12-June to 26-June
First day that drop off locations may be open for Primary Elections conducted by mail ballot.
16-June
Early voting may begin at the early voting polling places for the Primary Election with approval of the board of county commissioners.
18-June to 26-June
First day that walk-in voting locations (service centers) may be open for Primary Elections conducted by mail ballot.
19-June
Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot for the Primary Election if the ballot is to be mailed.
22-June
Last day for early voting for the Primary Election.
22-June
Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot for the Primary Election if the ballot is picked up in-person.
26-June
Primary Election  (Polls open 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.)

Last day for verification and counting of provisional ballots to be completed.

Last day interested parties may request a recount of the Primary Election at their own expense.

Last day for a write-in candidate to file an Affidavit of Intent for the General Election.
AUGUST, 2012
6-August Deadline to file an initiative petition with the Secretary of State for the 2012 General Election, no later than 3:00 p.m.
6-August Last day for judicial candidates to file a Declaration of Intent.
SEPTEMBER, 2012
5-September Last day for the Secretary of State to issue statements of sufficiency or insufficiency for initiative petitions filed on August 6th.
21-September
Last day to file pro/con comments pertaining to local ballot issues with the DEO in order to be included in the issue mailing.
22-September
Deadline to send mail-in ballots to overseas military voters.
OCTOBER, 2012
5-October
Last day to mail notice of election ballot issues.
9-October
Last day to register to vote for the General Election.
9-October to 6-November
Elector may complete a sworn affidavit for a change of address in the county clerk's office stating tha the/she moved within the state no later than the 30th day before the election.
12-October
Deadline for the county clerk and recorder to mail a voter information card concerning the General Election to all eligible electors whose records are marked active or inactive - failed to vote.
15-October
First day mail-in ballots may be sent to voters, except for UOCAVA voters.First day replacement ballots may be made available at the county clerk's office.
22-October
Early voting begins at the early voters' polling place for the General Election.

Last day for county chairpersons of each of the two major political parties to appoint Board of Canvassers for the General Election.
30-October
Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot for the General Election if mailed.

3-Aug. Wed. Last day for the county clerk and recorder conducting a mail ballot election to mail voter information cards to electors whose records are marked "Inactive - Failed to Vote." (No later than 90 days before a mail ballot election)
23-Aug. Tue. Deadline to sign intergovernmental agreements between the county clerks and political subdivisions that will be coordinating. (No later than 70 days before the election)
26-Aug. Fri. Last day for candidates for the office of school district director to file a nomination petition. (No later than 67 days before the election)
29-Aug. Mon. Last day to file an affidavit of intent to run as a write-in candidate for a non-partisan coordinated election. (By close of business on the 64th day before the election)
SEPTEMBER, 2011
16-Sep. Fri. Last day to file pro/con comments pertaining to local ballot issues with the designated election official in order to be included in the ballot issue notice. (Friday before the 45th day before the election)
17-Sep Sat. Deadline to send mail-in ballots to military and overseas electors. (No later than 45 days prior to the election)
18-Sep. Sun. Last day for Legislative Council to publish the title and text of statewide ballot measures in every legal newspaper. (At least 15 days prior to the final date of voter registration for the election)
28-Sep. Wed. to 3-Oct. Mon. Voter registration applications accepted at a voter registration agency, must be transmitted to the county clerk and recorder of the county in which the agency is located, no later than 5 days after the date of acceptance. (During the last 5 days before the last day for registration to vote in the election)
OCTOBER, 2011
3-Oct. Mon. Last day to register to vote for the Coordinated Election. (No later than 29 days before the election)
4-Oct. Tue.to1-Nov. Tue. Any elector who was registered in the state and moved prior to the close of registration may complete a change of address, and any elector who attempted to register prior to the close of registration may complete an emergency registration by appearing in person at the county clerk and recorder's office or authorized branch location. (For the 28 days before and on the day of the election)
11-Oct. Tue. First day mail/mail-in ballots may be sent to electors with an active request, except for UOCAVA electors. First day mail ballots may be made available at the county clerk and recorder's office if the Coordinated Election is conducted by mail ballot.(No sooner that 22 days before the election*)*Because the 22nd day falls on a holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day
14-Oct. Fri. Deadline for the county clerk to send mail ballots to each active elector for a Coordinated Election conducted by mail ballot. (No later than 18 days before the Election)
17-Oct. Mon. Early voting begins at the early voters' polling place for the Coordinated Election. (15 days before the election)
17-Oct. Mon. Last day to appoint board of canvassers for a nonpartisan election that is not coordinated by the county. If the election is coordinated, the canvass board will be appointed in accordance with the intergovernmental agreement. (At least 15 days before election)
17-Oct. Mon. Counting of ballots may begin 15 days prior to the election. No results may be disclosed until after 7:00 P.M. on election day.
25-Oct. Tue. Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot for the Coordinated Election if mailed. (No later than the 7th day before the election)
28-Oct. Fri. Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot for the Coordinated Election if the ballot is picked up in person. (Close of business the Friday before the election)
28-Oct. Fri. Last day for early voting at the early voters' polling place for the Coordinated Election. (Close of business the Friday preceding the election)
NOVEMBER, 2011
1-Nov. Tue. COORDINATED ELECTION(Polls open 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.) For local or statewide matters arising under Article X, Section 20 of the State Constitution and for regular biennial school elections. (The first Tuesday in November of odd-numbered years)
1-Nov. Tue. Emergency mail-in ballot requests must be made before 5:00 P.M. and returned no later than 7:00 P.M. on Coordinated election day.
1-Nov. Tue. All ballots must be in the hands of the county clerk by 7:00 p.m. on election day. Ballots cast by military and overseas voters must be sent no later than 7:00 P.M. on election day and received by the close of business on the 8th day after the election.
3-Nov. Thu. Deadline for the county clerk to send missing signature, signature verification, and missing ID letters for mail/mail-in ballots. Deadline for the county clerk to send missing signature letters for provisional ballots. (Within 3 days from signature/ID verification but no later than 2 days after election day)
9-Nov. Wed. Last day for ballots cast by military and overseas electors to be received by the county clerk in order to be counted. (No later than the 8th day after election day)

18-Nov. Fri. Deadline for the County Board of Canvassers to prepare official abstract of votes cast for the Coordinated Election. (No later than the 17th day after the Coordinated election)
18-Nov. Fri. Counties shall report the results of the post-election audit to the Secretary of State. (No later than 5 p.m. on the 17th day after the election)
21-Nov. Mon. Last day for County Clerks to transmit returns to the Secretary of State if there are statewide issues on the ballot. (No later than the 18th day after the election
DECEMBER, 2011
1-Dec. Thu. Last day to file a contest for statewide initiatives or referenda with the clerk of the district court. (Within 10 days from Nov. 21st)
1-Dec. Thu. Deadline for the Secretary of State to compile and total the returns received from all counties and determine if a recount is necessary. (No later than the 30th day after the election)
2-Dec. Fri. Last day an interested party may request a recount at its own expense. The request must be filed with the appropriate governing body. (Within 31 days after the election, to be completed no later than the 37th day after the election)
7-Dec. Wed. Last day to affiliate with a political party in order to vote in the precinct caucus if held on February 7. (2 months before the precinct caucus)
